Kalon BI Consulting - Your resource for actionable insights on home health profitability.
My name is Kalon Mitchell, I founded MEDTranDirect, a software company developing revenue cycle tools for healthcare. For the last five years, I have used business intelligence tools to explore data available from CMS in order to learn more about the impact of PDGM and other revenue cycle issues on home health agencies. Through this site, kaloncon.com, I share the results of my research using my blog and project Sword, a study of cost report data and home health profitability.
My Story
I founded my company, Remote Support Services, in 1986, when I was 25 years old. I supported a group of rural hospitals in Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas using hospital information systems I maintained on IBM computers. In the 1990's, I developed Windows-based software to collect, edit and transmit claim data (Ubinator and HCFAnator) and to capture remittance data through the ANSI 835 electronic remittance (PC Print Plus). In the early 2000s, I redeveloped these tools as web-based applications. My company provided one of the first SaaS applications in healthcare and was the first to pass testing with CMS for the new ANSI 837i claim format in 2001.

In the 2010's, I rebranded my company as MEDTranDirect. At the time, my company was one of only six organizations directly connected to CMS computer systems as a Network Service Vendor. Through this connection, I provided access to CMS services like Direct Data Entry, claims submission, and HETS eligibility through our PayerLink product. We also developed NOE Tracker which verified and automated the posting of hospice Notice of Election transactions.

I sold my company to WellSky in 2018. Afterward, I began researching the home health industry using CMS claim data (Limited Data Set) and the Sisense business intelligence platform. In 2019, I used this data to develop a tool that could predict future PDGM payments and their impact on the home health industry and individual agencies.

I developed additional tools through Sisense used by WellSky management and clients. I left WellSky in April of 2023. Now, I am leveraging my experience and this technology to research new topics using CMS data. I have published a blog through this Kalon BI Consulting site and developed the Sword project, a detailed study of home health profitability using cost report data. This report is published on this site along with the data used for its conclusions.
